In a bedroom there is one piece that organises everything else: the headboard. Done well, the bed looks generous, the nightstands line up, the sheer falls cleanly and the room feels like a hotel. Done badly, it shows everywhere: the bed looks small, the wall stays empty above it and the room reads as improvised.
At Casa Velura we have built made-to-measure upholstered headboards for residences, rental villas and hotel rooms in Bavaro, Punta Cana and Cap Cana for years. These are the criteria we use in the workshop before cutting the first board: none of it depends on taste, all of it depends on dimensions, fabric and structure.
Why the headboard matters more than it seems
The headboard is the visual anchor of the bedroom. It sets the room's reference height, defines how wide the bed reads and gives a backdrop to everything leaning against that wall.
It also solves concrete problems: it covers badly placed sockets, hides walls that are not level and, on concrete or block walls, saves the work a mural would require.
And in a rental property there is one more point: it is the first thing seen in the bedroom photo. A well-upholstered headboard lifts how the listing looks in the very first image.
The three dimensions to fix before upholstering
Width. It is measured from the bed, not the wall: mattress width plus 20-30 cm per side if you want visible nightstands and symmetry. Less than that and the headboard looks tight; more than 40 cm per side and it starts invading the nightstand.
Height. From the floor to the top edge of the headboard, and from the mattress to that same edge. What works: 60 to 90 cm above the mattress, depending on ceiling height and on who sleeps there.
Depth. The thickness of the padding. A 4-5 cm headboard is clean and minimal; 8-12 cm feels plush and more hotel-like. Anything beyond 15 cm starts taking space away from the bed.
All three are measured on site, with the bed already chosen. That visit is the one that saves the most time: it prevents building a headboard that later forces you to move nightstands or relocate wall lights.
Fabrics: what actually holds up on the coast
On the coast the enemy is not use, it is humidity. The fabrics that age best here are technical suede, tightly woven chenille, heavy linen blended with synthetics, and short-fibre boucle. All of them take salt air without going stiff.
What we avoid on headboards: loose fabrics with long pile (they mat with friction), untreated natural silks (hand cream marks them) and pure whites without protection (they yellow with time and humidity).
In every case we apply stain protection and water repellency. That is the difference between a fabric you wipe with a damp cloth for five years and one that needs dry cleaning every season.
Headboards for hotels and rental villas
Here the criteria change: the fabric does not have to please you for ten years, it has to survive heavy use and rotation cleaning. We prioritise mid tones and tight weaves, because they hide friction and age evenly.
We also build in modules, with the panel and the padding separable, so a damaged part can be replaced without touching the rest. In a 30-room hotel that means replacing one piece, not a whole set.
And we work in phases when a season is approaching: we measure the entire block, build in batches and install floor by floor so no room stays out of service longer than necessary.
Full panel, floating or fixed: when to use each
Fixed to the wall. The classic. It is anchored, takes up less volume and reads cleanest. We recommend it when space is tight and the nightstands are already defined.
Full panel. The headboard becomes a textile wall, sometimes with integrated sides. It brings order to high ceilings and large rooms, where a standalone headboard looks small.
Floating. Set away from the wall on a frame. It works well when there is a window or a door behind, and when the bed should read as an island inside the room.
The mistakes we correct every week
A headboard that is too tall, covering the sheer and forcing the curtain to be cut mid-height. It is fixed by measuring before building, with the curtain already planned.
Untreated fabric in an oceanfront villa: within a year, a humidity ring appears along the lower edge.
Inverted proportion: a king bed with a narrow headboard, which makes the bed look out of place.
Padding that is too thick in a small bedroom: it costs circulation and makes walking around the bed uncomfortable.
How long it takes and how it is installed
A standard made-to-measure headboard takes two to three weeks from fabric approval. With a full panel or integrated nightstands, three to four.
Installation is done on site by the Casa Velura team, and in most cases in a single visit. If there are curtains in the same room, we schedule both installations on the same day so the bedroom is not moved twice.
Before installing we check lighting and sockets: if wall lights sit over the headboard, the wiring is resolved in the same visit rather than later.
Frequently asked questions
Can you re-upholster a headboard I already own?
Yes, as long as the frame is sound. We inspect the structure, reinforce it if needed and replace padding and fabric. It costs considerably less than building a new one and keeps the dimensions that already work in the room.
How long does a custom upholstered headboard take?
Two to three weeks in standard sizes from fabric approval. With a full panel, integrated sides or combined with curtains, three to four weeks. The on-site measurement is scheduled within days.
Can the fabric be washed?
It depends on the weave. Technical blends and chenille are cleaned in place with a damp cloth and neutral products. Linen and natural fibres require dry cleaning. In every case we hand over the fabric data sheet with exact care instructions.
Does it work for a vacation rental villa?
It is one of the best investments per room. We suggest mid tones, tight weave and stain protection, and we build in modules so a damaged piece can be replaced on its own. If the villa is rented, we schedule installation on days without guests.
